Can anyone tell me where Roman Catholic burials took place in Bargoed c. 1950. Thank you
My family are buried here, my great grandparents, my couson paul, my father and my uncle Mike.
Last time I was up there for a wedding about 15 months ago it looked terrible. All the whitewash or whatever it is is peeling. Should have left it as it was.
Magnolia - what a mistake that was!!
This church has now been painted white. As soon as I get chance I will take a pic and upload it.
My grandmother was Sue Mills, my father was Edgar Mills, small world.
I remember Fred Lucas his son Trevor was friends with my brother Alan,Fred was our family Butcher in Gilfach and my husband and I went on to rent a flat of his above the chemist shop
I was born in Glaston Villa on the 8th March 1946. We lived with my aunie Sue Mills, my parents names were Hugh and Gwen. cross the roads ws farm, and behind the farm was a path called the black path.We moved out in 1950 to move up the grove (steel Houses)

My mother was Ethel Davis, her parents, my grandparents ,had a butcher shop in Bargoed, I think Hanbury Rd, They were George and Lucy Davis. My gran's sister was phylis who was married to Fred Lucas who also had a butcher shop in Bargoed up until the mid 1960's. Does anyone remember them?
My family and i lived just five minutes away from bargoed town centre, we were at the property called ''Gladstone Villa'' in the 1970's, can anyone remember it? it was directly opposit the r.a.f.a club. In the 1980's it was converted into a hotel and now its known as 'reds parc hotel' The interier has obviously changed alot as its been modernised but the exterier is very much the same apart from the extension which is the steak pit. I have quite a history there and memories of gladstone villa and bargoed town.
I lived in 8 Upper Wood Street and went to Bargoed South and Hengoed School. My father was Tom Hughes, Headmaster of Bargoed South Boys School until his early death in 1967. My mother was Doris Lucas and one of the large Lucas family of butchers in Gilfach and Cascade. I left in 1956 to study Medicine but my memories of my childhood spent in Bargoed -,the Park, the baths.,the mountain, the Emporium, Ricci's icecream, the sound of the shunting trucks at night, Rydens the photographers,Hiles the Saddlers,.TG Jones newsagents, the Hanbury ,Hall and Palace cinemas are very clear and happy.ones.

You might find the above Bargoed video link of interest. It covers the period 1920-1970. I was raised at 39 Cardiff Rd, up the steps, from 1942-1962. Our neighbours were Cyril Evans the drapers and Graham Davies, teacher and photographer. A near neighbour and friend was PJS Williams who became prominent in Plaid Cymru and a professor at Aber.
I have worked in education, software and music. My albums can be found on iTunes under David Keith Jones.
Thanks Menna for the comment about Payne's bakery...any other memories of the shop or Mr Payne would be greatfully received as I am trying to put a history together for the children. If there are any pictures at all I would like to buy them. Thanks again ! Robert
How can I get a copy of this photo of High Street?
Also does anyone have any photos of the Salvation Army in Greenfield Street, or any memories?
We always took part in the Whit Monday march, followed by a tea in the hall

Remember old Mr Payne, white, handle-bar moustache serving in the shop. Great smell of freshly baked loaves of bread - white tissue paper for wrapping them. Howard and Janet Payne were probably his grandchildren.
Sorry Payne's Bakery was on Greenfield Street. Any memories greatfully received !
Hi, does anyone remember Payne's Bakery on Green Street. This would have been around 1930 I suppose. My grandparents and great grandparents run it and I would love to hear any memories of the shop or even a photograph would be amazing. My Dad remembers all the Turkeys being cooked in the ovens at Christmas and the smell of bread baking early in the mornings. All sounds good to me ! Please contact with any thoughts or memories on robertpayne@live.co.uk

Hello, Im trying to find information on a man called William beard who i believe died in the mine.He was my great-grandfather who i only recently discovered. He was a coal miner. Does anyone know of any accidents which happened or where i can find any other information? any help would be great. thankyou. Elenna
does anyone know what happened to the old pit wheel and why it did not remain after the pit closed as the other old pits kept theirs there is no trace that this coal mine ever exsisted what a scandal
Hello David, I think your family had the romovals company in east View. Would love to hear from you.
I think you went on to university.
regards Ken Williams
I lived in East View too. There were great characters and frinds there. I can identify will all that Ken Williams said. Fights between bottom block and top block. Catching snakes and lizards down the banking, and over by Brittania colliery. Camps down the banking at the lower end of the stree, and crossing the Blast pipe into Ol man Preeces field to ride the pigs, when he wasn`t there. Bocker, Bernard Nicholl, Susan, George , Brian and Alan Whitcombe, Paul Gifford , David Ashford, Arthur Patterson, and hos brother. Ronnie Fairfax., Steven Smith, and my brother Maldwyn. Tell me something about these characters. Hopefully they are all still with us !!
Hello,! tell me more
As a child living in East View, Gilfach I remember playing on the banking above the Gilfach Fargoed halt looking out over the vast collery complex including the power station with its large coolong towers. As a group of youngsters we were an adventourious lot riding on the coal buckets across the valley venturing into the coal train marshalling yards between Gilfach and Brittannia and ocasionally falling into the "black" Rymney river and then I was in for a row at home. It was a hive of activity but what a dirty depressing place it was. I see it now and the river is clean with live fish and the dreadful pit has gone, life has to be better now that men dont have to go down those dangerious dirty holes in the ground to earn a living. Life has improved history should be marked but not through rose-tinted glases.
Re Top Hat club Bargoed.
Sandra, you may contact me at g.barnett@talktalk.net
I knew Mrs Cox stewardess of the TopHat club and her four sons.
My grandmother was the stewardess of the Top Hat club at 4 Gilfach Street in the 30's and 40's. I wonder whether you'd have any recollections of it from your family?
MY NAME IS CAROL NOT GLENYS , LIVED IN GILFACH STREET ,
my past memories are of gilfach visits to my gran and grancha
i was 5 years old at that time , my mum would take myself and my sisters on the bus from hengoed . every week to visit gran and granch. my grandparents lived in gilfach street oposite the old fire station where we would sit in the window waiting for the engine to appear. good times.

I worked in The Emporium in the early part of the 60's loved it there worked in the Toy Department at Christmas time and the Haberdashery Dept and Wool Department , Miss Evans from Aberbargoed was our buyer, left to marry and move away. My heart will always belong to Wales.
My mother Lilian Deneen worked at the Emporium in 1930. She was a buyer in thr Baby department. Are there any Archives for the shop? If so where can I read them?
My Grandmother worked at the Emporium in the 1920's and lived in. Does anyone else have relatives who worked there then?
they should bring back the emporium,..i remember my mother taking me to see father christmas there.
Hi Sharon,
My mother is a half-cousin of your father's. I have a couple of pictures of Reece, one on his rag a bone cart. Quite happy to share these with you if you wish to contact me.
Linda
can anyone rember my grandfather he was the rag a bone man. he also played accordion in front of emporium he only had one leg but he could get down the pub quicker than my dad. ruddy jones. his name was reece jones
i remember going to the emporium wih my mam and was always amazed when the money used to go up the shoots to the cashiers office and the change come back down.
Its a pity the tower c/w clock as gone.it was a good focal point of the town
I can remember my mother taking me to The Emporium to buy my duffle coat. The counter staff wrapped it in brown paper and tied it with string - things seemed to be more"green" back then.
I have just found out that my great grandmother's borther Edward Bryant and his wife Eliza may have lived in 50 Francis St. They did not have children and I thought they had spent all their life in Bristol but a funeral card has come to light which gives his address as 50 Francis St. According to Google maps this seems to be a shop on the corner of Francis Stree. He died in 1932. Does anyone know what the shop may have been in 1932 or just before or even know anything of this couple?
Pat Hughes

Hope i haven't offended antbody by scrutinizing their faces....just trying to find old friends. 50 years older now make it a bit difficult. Can anyone knows Bill Bevan (used to live in the Old Mill pub (sadly gone, such a lovely building). Bill was a good friend to me all those years ago (1950s). It would be fantastic to catch up an fill in lots of gaps that I have missed. Such a pity that Bargoed has lost it's vibrancy and what have they done with the Emporium CLOCK????? It seems that Blackwood is the place to be nowadays. Please help me if you can. with grateful thanks.

Lyndon, I lived next door to you and your parents in 39 Usk Rd. We used to use your bathroom once a week. You were a small boy at that time. I now live in Nottingham but I have kept up my contacts with Bargoed until my scoutmaster died a couple of years ago.
