We hope you enjoy your trip down memory lane here in Ystrad Mynach. If you recognise any of the pics, please use the comments box to share them with all of us.
Thanks
Property basically unchanged apart from it being converted to two residential properties and the covered gateway is long gone.Originaly a schoolhouse, social security office during the seventies. The new road delelopment will not affect it. The land behind the wall seen in the foreground will be incoperated into the redevelopment as has the old Glam-Mon Garage/carpet centre. Since Ystrad Fawr was demolished to make way for the new hospital several council
lors have aquired offshore bank accounts.
Its on the corner, just south of the Royal Oak Pub, on the roundabout turning for Maesycwmmer. Nearly opposite The Cottage Dance Centre. Caerphilly Road
where too in ystrad is this?
I used to go to school in Ystrad Mynach before moving to West End,Abercarn. We lived a couple of miles away in a house called Gwernor manor. I would be surprised but also very happy if someone could tell me if they know of the house and if it is still standing!
Yes it definitely is but I have heard it is to be demolished to make way for the new hospital.
During the War the building housed people responsible for the rationing of certain items, in particular Margerine
Am a bit concerend that like so many of our old houses and buildings in Ystrad this will soon be dragged down or moved to St Fagins - is there something so wrong with allowing a village to keep a little heritage and leave alone the things that were built to establish the village The worst example of this was the demolished Ystrad Fawr house and what they doing to the area is heartbreaking for a large majority of locals. Can't we have out say too????
The house is still there i do not think it as changed at all,it used to be unemployment office and the glam.mon. garage was opposite
The building is still there but looks totally different and is a household to 2 families. It is worth a look to see the changes---no lampost/gateway and will be chaged again shortly with the new road system to be done in near future with the Hospital being build nearby
Thanks Mark, It's hard to think that this is the same building.
yes this house is still there i only live up the road from it. the only thing different to it is double glazed windows.
I think this is at the bottom of Ystrad, just on the roundabout, opposite the old garage(now a furniture shop). Just before the council offices?? If I am right the house stil stands.
Does anyone know if this building is still there?

I am sure the row of houses is where my late grandad David Davies lived and my mother Brenda Jones was born.
The name of the cottage has been misspelt. It should be Pontargylla - Bridge on or over (the) Cylla. The correct spelling can just be made out on the picture
I believe the thatched cottage is where the co-op building used to be at the junction of Penallta Road and Bedwlwyn Road
Yes the house is named after the Cylla brook that runs from Gelligaer mountain joining the river rhymney at Ysrad Mynach. The valley running from Penpedairheol down past Penallta is called Cwm Cylla - valley of the Cylla river.
I believe that the Pont relates to a bridge ( e.g. Pont-y-pridd ) and Gylla may relate to the small brook / stream which flows into the one behind commercial street!! Cythla??
Names of people
In doorway: Will & Jenny Davies (formaly Perrot)
Left to right:
Will Meyrick, Will Ress (Twyn), Jack Rees, Tom Meyrick & Post Master of Maesycwmmer
Very different now---cottage has gone and houses on the right hand side of road. Can anyone say where the name PONTYAGYLLA comes from??
